THE ART OF THE FREE TABLE
I recently picked up a book, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, written by Marie Condo, professional cleaning consultant and organizer. Marie Condo instructs how to tidy and simplify your life. She recommends we follow a simple rule: If you pick up an item and it does not spark joy - toss it. As I took a good look around and started to hone in on all the things we had accumulated over the years, I realized many of the items tucked away in the nooks and crannies of our house no longer sparked joy and perhaps it was time to say farewell.
Much to my husband’s dismay, I began to think about tag selling everything that did not spark joy, including his stuff too! My quest began in the basement, and sure enough the items we accumulated over the years was monumental. A tag sale on the horizon seemed daunting and burdensome. I paused and waited for inspiration.
“Come Holy Spirit”. Sure enough, an idea came. “Give away these joyless items!” I would simply just let them go. Making this decision was like a breath of fresh air - I could see the light again, and new space being created on my shelves. My idea was to have a table where many different items were displayed- something for everyone. I would call it a FREE TABLE. Give it away - no charge - Perhaps these things would spark joy for someone else, and help others who were struggling because of the pandemic. The bonus came when my husband decided to donate many items from the garage. This was the beginning of the free table concept.
It goes like this - Make a large sign, big enough for people to see as they drive by. Set up a table at the end of your driveway. Lay out all the items that you are ready to give up - and WALK AWAY. Just walk away………..
And sure enough people did come. Watching others pick up an item (that I once loved but no longer do), and walk away with a smile was wonderful. Meeting new people and conversing about all kinds of things, laughing, and simply saying have a great day was by far the greatest reward. It was a win win for everyone. You have more space and someone has a new treasure that they love.
What can we do to help others? Not sure? Wait - pause - pray - and listen to what comes into your mind, and then take action! Consider creating a free table, and then watch what happens.
Happiness abounds! Giving to others is one of the most gratifying feelings I have ever experienced. I highly recommend it!
