Inspirica from Homeless to Home
St. Paul's has been providing dinners on the 5th Wednesdays at the Woodlawn campus, site of former St. Luke's Episcopal Church for many years. Lori and Allan Jackson and family did this prior to a small group continuing. Some of us are outside of our parish who heard about this activity and wanted to be part of our efforts and we are so very grateful for their loyal participation!
Our group shares the dinner's components: someone shops at Shop Rite and prepares salad greens, 2 bake cookies at home, 3-4 people work in Selleck on the Tuesday before the 5th Wednesday to prepare ingredients, cook and disperse among 3 huge foil pans which are covered with heavy duty foil and refrigerated. We've been tweaking a very good recipe of turkey ziti from former members. Someone prepares lemonade and iced tea, Italian bread for 40 and washes the pots. On Wednesday at 4:30, casseroles are warmed in the convection oven for an hr. prior to loading the "way back" of someone's large vehicle on 3 large metal trays, drinks, salad greens, bread, butter and cookies for transfer to Inspirica on Woodlawn Pl. and Pacific, Stamford.
We serve the folks who live in women's housing as well as some men from Gillead House. Our food is much enjoyed and appreciated. (We still like it, too!) Recently, we've had requests for food for families living at the Franklin St. Inspirica so we are dividing 1 of the large trays into smaller units to feed families of 4-6 and those are delivered the following day, arranged via Sarah Kennedy, volunteer coordinator for Inspirica-Franklin St.
It all takes time but with willing participants, it gets done, joyfully. If you would like to join us for part of this ministry, you'll be welcome! Please call Sue Grele, 203 637 4293.
